The United States ranks well below all other industrialized countries in maternity and infant health outcomes. These poor outcomes disproportionately impact black and brown families. First time moms, especially those with less family and community support, are also more at risk across all races and ethnicities. It is clear that we, as a country, need to do better.
One solution is the increase the use of midwives and birth centers. Access to midwifery care results in more prenatal care, better utilization of resources, and better overall patient experience. Both maternal and infant outcomes improve in midwifery care models.
